Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa on Thursday inaugurated the 2026 Integrated Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) and Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) campaign, targeting 1.150 million beneficiaries.
Speaking at the ceremony in Yola, Fintiri who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Kaletafwa Farauta, said that the beneficiaries were expected to benefit from the 2.583 million treated mosquito nets.
He said that 4.5 million doses of anti-malaria medicine were also procured for the prevention of malaria for children from three months to 59 months old.
He said that malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa particularly in children under five years of age and pregnant women.
Fintri added that his administration recognised the devastating impact of the disease on families and communities and would continue to prioritise effective and sustainable interventions.
He said that the success of malaria control efforts relied heavily on strong partnerships.
“I wish to sincerely acknowledge and commend our implementing partners, the Society for Family Health (SFH), Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for their unwavering support and collaboration.
“These partners have played critical roles in supporting malaria prevention and control in Nigeria through interventions such as strengthening the health system and community,” he said.
The governor urged the traditional and religious leaders, healthcare workers, the media and other stakeholders to support the initiative through mobilisation and awareness creation.
He further urged mothers and caregivers to ensure their children received all doses of the SMC medicines and use the insecticide-treated nets provided.
Mohammed Chubado, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, appreciated the federal and state governments for the initiative aimed at improving the well-being of the citizens.
He called on the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the medication and the nets.
Mr Benjamin Nashon also commended the efforts of the state government towards eliminating malaria in the state.
He said that to ensure the success of the exercise, no fewer than 12,208 ad-hoc staff were engaged across the 21 local government areas in the state (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
