Man City enter race for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo

Manchester City have reportedly made an initial enquiry about Cody Gakpo as they consider a late move for the Liverpool forward before the transfer window closes.

City have contacted the player’s representatives to establish the conditions required for a potential transfer, although discussions have not yet reached the stage of formal negotiations between the clubs.

Tottenham are also interested in the Netherlands international, setting up a potential battle for the versatile attacker.

City assess late move for Gakpo

City are looking to strengthen their attacking options after Tottenham moved closer to signing Savinho and Omar Marmoush from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Gakpo’s versatility is believed to be a major attraction. The 26-year-old can operate from the left wing or through the middle, giving City another option alongside Erling Haaland.

The club are expected to decide within the next 24 hours whether to advance their interest before the September 1 deadline.

Gakpo enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, contributing nine goals and six assists for Liverpool. He also opened his account for the new season by scoring against Newcastle United at the weekend.

Liverpool reluctant to sell forward

Liverpool’s position remains that Gakpo is not for sale unless an exceptional offer arrives.

The Reds would also need to strengthen their own attack before considering the forward’s departure. Liverpool are pursuing Barcelona winger Bradley Barcola and Brighton forward Yankuba Minteh as potential additions.

Gakpo’s own preference could also become significant. The Netherlands international wants to feel like an important part of Liverpool’s plans, while the opportunity to join City could appeal to him.

Tottenham have been monitoring the situation as they look to reshape their attack. Their interest in Gakpo predates City’s involvement, but City’s late approach could complicate their pursuit.

City have already agreed a deal for Palmeiras winger Allan Elias for an initial £32m, but Enzo Maresca is still keen to add another attacker.

With Jeremy Doku, Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden already available, City have considerable attacking depth. However, Gakpo’s experience, flexibility and goalscoring ability have made him an attractive late-window option.
