A Nigerian man has shared an emotional account of how a routine check on the school fees of his late friend’s children uncovered a surprising misunderstanding and a family dispute.
He said he has been responsible for the children’s education since his friend passed away three years ago.
According to him, he made a personal promise to support the children and has been paying their school fees despite his own financial limitations.
He explained that he was later informed by someone that the children’s mother had inflated the fees.
He said the information left him unsettled, especially as he was also contacted by the widow to settle an outstanding balance, which he eventually paid after giving her permission to remind him.
Investigation into school fees reveals discrepancy
The man said he later decided to verify the claim by contacting the children’s school directly to confirm the actual fees being paid.
He stated that the school provided a breakdown of the fees for each class, revealing that he had actually been underpaying by about 17,000 naira, contrary to what he had been told.
Following this discovery, he arranged a meeting with the woman to clarify the situation. During the discussion, he asked why she had not informed him of the exact school fees.
She reportedly explained that there had been an increase in fees but she chose not to inform him, believing he was already doing enough for the children.
Emotional confrontation over alleged misinformation
The man said he later informed her that he had been told she inflated the fees, revealing that the source was her elder sister who lives with them.
He presented the phone number, time of contact, and the message he received as evidence during their conversation.
According to him, she broke down in tears and was unable to respond further after hearing the revelation.
He expressed disappointment over the situation, questioning why anyone would spread such information when the reality was different.
He added that he immediately cleared the outstanding difference after confirming the actual fees.
