The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, Akaninyene Udo, for allegedly spreading false information on social media that caused fear among residents.
According to the police, Udo, who uses the name “AK Philo” online, shared a viral post claiming that bandits were planning to attack Eket and nearby communities. The post included a threatening message and a picture of an armed man, leading to panic in the area.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John said the suspect, who is from Esit Eket Local Government Area, deliberately shared the false information to create fear and insecurity among residents.
She explained that the police have been monitoring people who use social media to spread unverified security alerts and fake news.
The command assured residents that there is no known security threat in Akwa Ibom State and that the state remains peaceful and secure.
DSP John said investigations have been completed and the suspect will be charged in court. She added that efforts are ongoing to identify others who helped spread the false information.
The police warned members of the public against sharing unverified security reports, stressing that spreading fake news is a criminal offence and can lead to prosecution.
Residents were advised to confirm sensitive information through official sources before sharing it and to report genuine security concerns to the nearest police station or emergency response channels.
