Nigerian content creator Mummy Wa has sparked controversy after alleging that many women in the country’s entertainment industry engage in prostitution.
She made the claim during a recent conversation while questioning how some female entertainers maintain lavish lifestyles despite, in her view, having no publicly known businesses or other clear sources of income.
Mummy Wa argued that claims of alternative sources of income should be supported by evidence, rather than simply being cited to explain the wealth of entertainers.
Her comments followed an argument from another participant who said some women receive financial support from wealthy men because of their appearance, fame or personal relationships.
The participant, however, maintained that accepting financial assistance from a man does not automatically amount to prostitution.
Another influencer also pushed back against the claim, noting that several women in the entertainment industry are creative entrepreneurs with multiple legitimate sources of income.
She cited actress and entrepreneur King Mitchy as an example of an entertainer who has business interests outside the industry.
Mummy Wa, however, maintained her position, insisting that such alternative income streams should be verifiable rather than merely mentioned as an explanation for a celebrity’s lifestyle.
A former Big Brother Naija housemate who participated in the discussion also cautioned against automatically describing women as either financially independent or dependent simply because their sources of income are not publicly known.
The comments have generated debate over the financial lives of female entertainers, the assumptions often made about women in the industry and the extent to which celebrities should publicly account for their sources of wealth.
