Floodwaters have inundated the corridors of Mensah Sarbah Hall, one of the residential halls at the University of Ghana, Legon, as today’s torrential rains caused widespread flooding that penetrated the interior of the student dormitory and left rooms and passageways submerged.
In a tending videos capturing inside the hall shows students wading through brown floodwater along the blue-walled corridors of the residence, with water levels reaching ankle to knee height across the length of the building.
A second clip shows a chair floating freely down a completely submerged hallway, underscoring the depth and force of the flooding inside the facility.
The flooding of Mensah Sarbah Hall adds a significant dimension to the day’s unfolding flood crisis across Accra, bringing the disaster directly onto the campus of Ghana’s premier university and into the living spaces of hundreds of students.
The welfare implications for affected students are considerable, including potential damage to personal belongings, academic materials, electronics, and clothing. The structural impact of sustained flooding on the hall’s ageing infrastructure also raises concern.
Today’s flooding has also affected Achimota Mile 7, where residents were stranded on rooftops, the Spintex to Polo Grounds corridor, where an Aayalolo bus was submerged, and several other parts of the capital, painting a picture of a city overwhelmed by a single morning’s rainfall.
