Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel believes Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton could be on his way to Manchester United next summer.
The former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder has been impressed by Wharton’s development and believes the England international has the ability to take the next major step in his career at Old Trafford.
Mikel made the prediction while speaking on the Obi One Podcast, where he revealed his strong admiration for the 22-year-old midfielder.
Mikel expects Wharton to leave Palace
Mikel believes Palace could keep Wharton for another season before allowing him to pursue a move away from Selhurst Park.
“I love him! I love Adam Wharton, I’m a big, big fan,” Mikel said.
“I think he’s going to go places, though, I think next season he will leave Crystal Palace. I think they want to keep him for one more season and I see him going to Manchester United next season.”
Wharton has established himself as an important part of Palace’s midfield, with his composure and technical ability earning praise during his development in the Premier League.
Mikel, who famously came close to joining Manchester United during his own playing career, believes those qualities could make Wharton a strong fit for the Red Devils.
Palace hold strong negotiating position
Any potential move, however, could prove expensive for Manchester United.
Wharton is contracted to Crystal Palace until June 2029, meaning the Eagles have no immediate pressure to sell and can take a strong position in any negotiations.
That long-term contract could give Palace significant leverage if United make an approach, particularly given the premium often attached to young English midfielders.
Manchester United are also continuing to look for greater consistency in the centre of the pitch, potentially creating an opportunity for a player with Wharton’s profile.
For now, there is no indication that a deal is imminent, with Mikel’s prediction remaining purely speculative.
