The Nigerian military has commenced the relocation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Gana Ali and Stadium camps in Monguno, Borno State, to a centralised Rapid Response Camp, citing growing security threats and terrorist infiltration.
In a statement, the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Sector 3 Operation Hadin Kai/MNJTF, Lieutenant Ayodeji Abiodun, said the relocation became necessary following intelligence reports linking the affected camps to activities of Boko Haram/ISWAP عناصر.
According to the statement, the Gana Ali and Stadium camps had evolved into “notorious hideouts” for terrorist elements who infiltrate Monguno town from the Marte axis.
“Intelligence has revealed that some residents in these locations have been providing accommodation and concealment for terrorists, especially during attacks on military positions,” Abiodun stated.
He noted that the camps’ proximity to military deployments at Charlie 13 and Charlie 7 had exposed troops to repeated attacks, including a recent assault on April 12, 2026, which resulted in casualties.
The statement further disclosed that terrorists had restricted access to the camps, making them inaccessible to other residents and even members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), whose personnel previously deployed there were killed.
The military explained that some structures within the camps were identified as operational bases for insurgents, including for planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and staging ambushes.
“Before the clearance operations, residents were given time to relocate to the Rapid Response Camp for their safety and better coordination,” the statement added.
Abiodun emphasized that the relocation is being conducted in line with established rules of engagement and with full respect for human rights.
He urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and report suspicious activities.
“Community cooperation remains vital in ensuring the success of ongoing operations,” he said.
