The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, on Thursday clarified that the Federal Government had not approved Adire as the new uniform for members of the National Youth Service Corps.
The clarification followed widespread reactions to comments credited to the minister suggesting that the iconic khaki uniform would be replaced with locally produced Adire as part of ongoing reforms of the scheme.
In a statement posted on his official X handle, Olawande said his remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief had been misinterpreted.
He explained that Adire and Ankara were only examples of proposals being considered during consultations on the reform of the NYSC and not a final decision.
“My intention was simply to cite examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward in the course of our consultations. It was not an announcement that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved to replace the current NYSC uniform,” he said.
The minister stated that no final decision had been taken on the fabric or design of the proposed uniform.
According to him, the government is considering options that meet the requirements of professional appearance, national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness and national pride.
He said any decision would be based on extensive consultations with stakeholders and what best serves the interests of the NYSC and the country.
Olawande also urged Nigerians not to allow discussions about the proposed uniform to overshadow the broader reforms being introduced to reposition the scheme.
He said the reforms are aimed at improving employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery and easing the transition of corps members from school to productive careers.
The minister had earlier stated during a television interview that Adire was being considered as part of reforms approved by the Federal Executive Council, prompting reports that the traditional khaki uniform would be replaced.
