Mixed Reactions Trail Release Of Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers

The release of pupils and teachers abducted from Ahoro-Esinele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many celebrating the victims’ freedom while others questioned the Federal Government’s account of the rescue operation.

NAIJAONPOINT reports that the victims regained their freedom nearly two months after armed men kidnapped them during an attack on the community.

One of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was killed while in captivity.

The Federal Government on Friday announced the release of the abducted pupils and teachers, saying the victims were rescued through a coordinated operation involving security agencies.

According to the Presidency, eight suspected kidnappers were arrested during the operation, while several others were neutralised.

It also disclosed that a suspected kingpin linked to the abduction was among those apprehended.

While many Nigerians described the development as a huge relief, several social media users demanded greater transparency from the authorities over the operation.

A user, @Quazeem215, questioned the official claim that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested, saying, “Funny how they always show us the rescued victims, but never the captured terrorists or bandits. If eight were truly arrested, where are they? If a kingpin is in custody, show Nigerians. Transparency builds trust, stories alone don’t.”

Another user, UbamaraChukwu, expressed scepticism over the government’s account of the operation, saying: “It’s suspicious that you could parrot the ‘rescue’ with no evidence to prove that those involved have been eliminated, and we are now expected to wait to receive fabricated reports. For a government that is completely disconnected from the masses, one would have expected transparency in your reportage.”

Another user, @SleemMedia, wrote: “Something about this whole situation just doesn’t add up to me. Right when public attention starts fading, a dramatic rescue is announced. And another thing… they appear surprisingly clean and well-presented after reportedly spending so much time in the bush. Did they somehow have spare clothes with them? At what point during their ordeals did they decide to dress them up? Is it the government or the terrorists that extended this goodwill? The children are also full of strength to say thank you sir. Hmmmmm”

Also doubting the official narrative, @LionelKuti wrote: “Who is the government fooling ? Name the terrorists and their sponsors, name the location the clash of rescue happened and let Nigerians verify.”

The_KenSylva alleged that a ransom was paid for the victims’ release, stating: “Another heavy ransom from the money of the Nigerian state has been put in the hands of the sponsors behind the banditry. Lie to yourself that it is a rescue, we are happy for their release but FG should keep their lies to themselves.”

Similarly, Osondueverest questioned the government’s claims, writing: “You people take Nigerians as mumu. Kidnapers that held these innocent children for two months were captured and we don’t get to see them whether in bag or alive with visible injuries.”

Despite the doubts, many Nigerians welcomed the victims’ release and commended security personnel involved in the operation.

@Yomikuku wrote: “Thank God!!! What a relief!!! Appreciation and prayers to @officialABAT all the gallant officers & civilian groups that played a big part in this successful operation. Prosecution of the arrested terrorists & implementation of the maximum sanctions must be done within 30 days!”

Calling for the victims’ rehabilitation, Chidiekweonu said: “Good news, they have really suffered. Thank you to those who put in the effort to ensure their release. Now is time for rehabilitation. Those kids must be traumatized, they need proper help, medically and psychologically.”

Another user, @NewstonesR, urged the government to provide long-term support for the children, saying: “And those Children needs to be ensure they are well groomed and be given scholarships each till they finish school. What happened them was due to the failed Nigerian security system. Their welfare must be taken care of for month with medical support and grooming.”

Meanwhile, @Henrolson criticised the aftermath of the rescue, alleging: “After everything, they were forced to make videos thanking the same oppressors.”
