A clip making the rounds on social media has captured the moment a motorist challenged a man at a checkpoint who claimed to be affiliated with law enforcement but was unable to produce identification.

In the footage, the man is seen holding a wooden stick and claiming his ID is with the police, though he does not produce it at any point during the confrontation.

The exchange drew a crowd and sparked visible tension as the motorist questioned the basis on which the individual was stopping vehicles.

Many viewers have interpreted the clip as a bold pushback against so-called “camp boys”  civilians in plain clothes who often assist officers at checkpoints and are widely associated with the collection of unofficial tolls and extortion.

Nigeria’s Police Act requires officers to display visible name tags and appear in full uniform at checkpoints.

The Inspector-General of Police has recently urged members of the public to report violations of these standards, though the force is yet to comment on the specific clip currently in circulation.
