The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the Kano State Police Command over its alleged refusal to comply with a court order directing the release of a detained legal practitioner, describing the action as a dangerous disregard for the rule of law and judicial authority.
The Chairman of the association’s Kano branch, Usman Umar Fari, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano.
He said the association was disturbed by what it called the “blatant, lawless, and unacceptable disregard for the judiciary” allegedly displayed by the police command.
According to the statement, the Kano State High Court on May 19, 2026, in suit number K/M1210/2026 between Barrister Ahmad Tijjani Miko and the Commissioner of Police, Kano State, alongside three others, ordered the immediate release of the legal practitioner after what the association described as seven days of unlawful detention without trial.

The association stated that the court order was duly served on the Commissioner of Police in Kano, but alleged that the police command failed to obey the directive and continued to detain the lawyer.
“When those who are paid by taxpayers to enforce the law become the frontline violators of the law, the fabric of civil society is fundamentally threatened,” the statement said.
The NBA further described the alleged disobedience as not only a violation of the detained lawyer’s fundamental human rights, but also “a direct assault on the judiciary and a dangerous invitation to anarchy.”

It warned that such actions could send the wrong signal to the public that compliance with court orders is optional, stressing that law enforcement agencies must operate within the provisions of the Constitution.
“The Police Force is a creation of the law and must operate strictly within the ambit of the constitution. We will not stand by and watch the country slide into a state of institutionalized lawlessness,” the statement added.
The association consequently demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Barrister Ahmad Tijjani Miko in compliance with the subsisting order of the Kano State High Court.
