Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has clarified viral social media reports on disciplinary sanctions imposed on some cadets, describing the publications as unauthorised.
The academy said its attention had been drawn to posts circulating online regarding sanctions meted out to erring cadets following the recently conducted Commandant’s Orders at its headquarters in Afaka, Kaduna.
SolaceBase reports that in the viral posting, some of the Academy’s cadet sanctioned for various offences which ranged from Theft, brutality, substance abuse, AWOL and physical contact. Some were dismissed while others were withdrawn.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Academy Public Relations Officer, Reuben Kovangiya, the NDA said Commandant’s Orders were routine administrative and disciplinary mechanisms in the military for addressing infractions.
It explained that as the premier military institution responsible for training officer cadets, it applies a range of sanctions depending on the severity of offences, as stipulated in the NDA Cadets’ Handbook on Discipline and Administration.
According to the academy, such sanctions include confinement, relegation, withdrawal and dismissal.

It added that the outcome of the recent Commandant’s Orders led to the dismissal and withdrawal of some cadets found guilty of various offences.
The NDA, however, stated that the viral social media posts detailing disciplinary actions against cadets were not authorised by the academy.
It said the publications might have emanated from individuals seeking relevance.
“The academy does not indulge in publicising administrative procedures or unconscionable actions, based on the need to uphold established military ethics, traditions and the principle of confidentiality guiding administrative procedures,” it said.
The NDA reiterated its commitment to producing disciplined, morally upright and academically sound officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
It added that it maintained zero tolerance for misconduct and any breach of established standards.
The academy also reassured the public of its commitment to its mandate of providing officer cadets with the knowledge, skills and values required of military officers through military, academic and character development.(NAN)
