Nigeria and the United States have commenced the second edition of their Joint Working Group meeting aimed at evaluating progress in bilateral counterterrorism efforts and strengthening security collaboration between both countries.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed this in a statement shared on X, saying the meeting would focus on “evaluat[ing] progress in bilateral counterterrorism efforts and charting the next phase of security collaboration between Nigeria and the United States of America.”
The Nigerian delegation is led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, while the United States delegation is headed by Allison Hooker, the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the first edition of the meeting was held in Abuja in January 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation in security and intelligence sharing, protection of vulnerable communities, particularly those at risk of religiously motivated violence, and other areas of mutual interest.

She said the ongoing sessions are geared towards “strengthening Nigeria–United States security and defence cooperation,” while reviewing plans for the return and enhanced protection of internally displaced persons.
The discussions will also cover intelligence gathering and coordination, efforts to tackle terrorist financing, holding perpetrators accountable and improving border control measures to prevent the movement of illicit goods, resources and people.
The minister added that the meeting would include “a strategic review of the Defense Roadmap” as both countries seek to deepen their security and defence partnership.

The engagement underscores the continued cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in addressing terrorism, strengthening intelligence coordination and improving security measures across areas of mutual interest.
