The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has declared that Nigeria’s mounting security and economic challenges are surmountable, calling on leaders to govern with justice and citizens to offer their support, as Kano marked the Eid-el-Adha celebrations with a colourful durbar on Wednesday.
Speaking after leading the Eid prayers at the Kano Central Eid Ground in Kofar Mata, Sanusi acknowledged the weight of the nation’s current difficulties — insecurity, economic hardship, and deepening social divisions — but struck a note of cautious optimism, saying the situation remained within reach of resolution.
“By the grace of God, there will be solutions as long as leaders ensure justice and followers support them,” the emir said.
He reminded Muslims of the spiritual essence of Eid-el-Adha, urging the faithful to observe the ritual sacrifice as an act of worship and to extend generosity to the less privileged in their communities.
He also called on Nigerians to return to moral rectitude, stressing that meaningful national change begins at the level of the individual.
Sanusi further urged citizens to respect national laws, invest in education, and pay greater attention to the upbringing of children, while appealing for sustained public cooperation with security agencies in their efforts to contain insecurity across the country.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, his deputy Murtala Sule Garo, and other senior government officials were among the dignitaries present at the event.
In keeping with centuries-old tradition, Sanusi rode on horseback in a resplendent procession from his palace to the Eid ground and back, drawing large crowds of residents and visitors who lined the route to witness the spectacle.
The durbar marked a significant return of the cultural celebration after a period of disruption tied to the prolonged palace dispute involving former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.
Sanusi is expected to preside over further Sallah durbar events in the coming days, including Hawan Nassarawa, Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi, occasions that collectively showcase the depth and richness of Kano’s royal heritage.
