The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, has advised women to prioritise financial stability and character when choosing a life partner, rather than focusing solely on religious devotion.
Speaking during the May edition of the Holy Ghost Service, Adeboye stressed the importance of practical responsibility, urging women to ask potential suitors about their means of livelihood.
“No matter how spiritual a man may appear, ask him if he has a job,” he said, noting that provision is a key responsibility in marriage.
Referencing biblical teachings, the cleric cited the account of Adam in the Book of Genesis, pointing out that God gave him work before giving him a wife. He added that a man’s ability to provide is central to building a stable home.
Adeboye also cautioned against being swayed by outward expressions of affection or impressive speech, warning that some men may use flattery to mislead. He encouraged women to seek evidence of a suitor’s claims, especially regarding their occupation.
He further urged women to prioritise holiness, advising them to walk away from relationships where a man’s conduct does not align with his professed faith.
“If he does not live by the standards he claims, then it is a red flag,” he said.
Addressing men, Adeboye warned against choosing partners based solely on physical appearance, stressing the need for prayer and discernment in making marital decisions.
He also advised men to consider practical qualities such as domestic capability and financial prudence, cautioning against entering relationships that could lead to unnecessary financial strain.
The cleric also touched on national issues, stating that the outcome of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election ultimately rests on divine will, adding that God’s purpose would prevail regardless of human efforts.
