The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau on Sunday.
The announcement was contained in a statement shared by Noun on X and signed by the University Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff and students of the institution.
According to the university, Marafa’s death occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in what it described as a “sudden and untimely” incident.
“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the statement said.
The university described the late Bursar as a “dedicated and committed staff member” who served the institution meritoriously and held various positions of responsibility during his career.
NOUN said Marafa was appointed its Bursar in September 2026 and assumed the position with “a strong sense of duty and commitment to the advancement of the University.”
His death has plunged the university community into mourning, with the institution describing the development as “a profound loss” to staff and students.
“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement said.
The university extended its condolences to Marafa’s immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others affected by his death.
“We pray that the Almighty Allah grants the family and the entire University community the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” NOUN said.
The institution added that further information on the burial arrangements would be communicated once details were released by the deceased’s family.
The university prayed that Allah would forgive Marafa’s shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.
