A man identified as Kwame Poku has been captured in a viral video invoking traditional deities against any delegate who proceeds to vote in the New Patriotic Party’s disputed Bantama Constituency Executive Elections, deepening an already volatile internal party conflict.
In the video, Kwame Poku is seen smashing an egg and a bottle of schnapps while invoking the names of revered traditional deities, including Antoa and Akonadi, calling on them to punish anyone who acts contrary to a court injunction connected to the disputed election.
The video emerged a day after violence disrupted the constituency’s executive election at the Kumasi Cultural Centre on Saturday, July 11, when individuals allegedly stormed the venue, destroyed ballot boxes and papers, and assaulted election officials despite the reported existence of a court injunction against the exercise.
One election officer sustained a foot injury and was treated at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Three suspects, identified as Shaibu Bamba, the Constituency Organiser, and a Polling Station Chairman known as Abu, were arrested, and police declared the venue a crime scene.
The Bantama constituency has been embroiled in weeks of internal turmoil over allegations that the party’s electoral album was manipulated to remove long-serving delegates ahead of the vote, a dispute that has pitted Constituency Chairman Fiifi Mensah against Bantama MP Francis Asenso-Boakye.
A concerned youth group has since petitioned police over alleged threats ahead of the elections.
Investigations into Saturday’s violence and the legality of the electoral process remain ongoing.
