The National Universities Commission, NUC, has granted Iconic Open University a full statutory licence, formally recognising the institution as a fully licensed private university in Nigeria.
The licence was issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education, following the successful completion of the university’s probationary period, which began after its initial licensing in 2023.
The development followed a licence validation assessment conducted by the NUC in May 2026.
During the assessment, the commission evaluated the university’s academic systems and programmes, faculty, governance structures, infrastructure, quality assurance mechanisms and overall institutional capacity.
The transition from a provisional licence to a full statutory licence indicates that the university has met the regulatory requirements set by the Federal Government and the NUC.
The licence was issued under the leadership of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the NUC Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.
With the approval, Iconic Open University is authorised to continue providing university education and awarding degrees in accordance with Nigerian laws, regulations and NUC requirements.
The university said the approval, three years after its initial licensing, marked a significant milestone in its institutional development.
It said the development also reflected its commitment to regulatory compliance, academic quality, innovation and expanding access to higher education.
The management expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, NUC, members of the university community, students, faculty, staff, partners and other stakeholders for their contributions to the institution’s development.
