Iran-US deal: US President Donald Trump has sought several amendments to the proposed peace deal his envoys reached with their Iranian counterparts, sending the agreement back for further revisions as he wants stronger provisions on certain matters.
What changes Trump seeks in Iran-US deal?
According to a report by Axios, during a meeting held in the White House Situation Room on Friday, Trump asked several points in the deal to be strengthened, particularly those related to Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, which he often refers to as “nuclear dust”.
Citing US officials in know of the matter, the report said that Trump has asked his team to make changes to the draft on clauses regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
According to US officials familiar with the discussions, the main concern for Trump remains Iran’s uranium stockpile, and while the current draft includes a vague commitment from Tehran not to pursue nuclear weapons, it does not contain detailed concessions beyond that pledge.

While the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington provides for a 60-day window to negotiate on nuclear commitments from Iran and sanctions relief from the United States, the first issue on the docket is how to dispose of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and limit further enrichment.
Trump seeks more precise language on how and when the US would take possession of Iran’s enriched uranium, and wants more clarity on the proposed transfer of nuclear material and the timeline involved.
As per the report, Trump also wants to amend some of the wording around the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, though officials did not provide further details regarding the specific changes he sought to that section of the draft deal.
Trump hints at military options if talks fail
On Sunday, Trump told Fox News that a peace deal with Iran is on the cards, but stressed that any agreement must include a guarantee against nuclear weapons, while also underlining that military action remains a viable option if talks fail.
“We are making a great deal; otherwise we’ll just go back and finish it off militarily. We’re close to a very good deal, and if we can make it good, otherwise we just start up with the Department of War,” he said
Trump once again claimed that Iran had been defeated militarily. “We’ve essentially defeated their military. I would rather get a deal because we can open the strait immediately upon signing. The one guarantee that I have is that there will be no nuclear weapons. They’ve agreed to that.”
“We’re getting what we want slowly. Very tough negotiators. It takes a long time. I’m in no hurry… If you’re going to be in a hurry, you’re not going to make a good deal. “Slowly but surely we’re getting what we want–and if we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end it a different way,” he added.
What did Iran say?
Meanwhile, Iranian officials indicated Tehran has not yet approved the final version of the agreement, and that a deal was close but not yet complete. According to Iranian state media, under the current arrangement, Washington would unfreeze billions of dollars in frozen funds for Tehran, a claim refuted by the Trump administration.
Trump’s move has launched another round of back-and-forth between the parties that could last several days, with US officials saying that Tehran would likely need around three days to respond to the latest American proposals.
