NULASS-LASU unveils 3-Day ELC 5.0 on lawmaking, heritage

The 11th National Union of Lagos State Students, Lagos State University Students Parliamentary Council, has unveiled the Eko Legislative Conference 5.0, scheduled to hold from Monday, April 4 to Wednesday, April 6, 2026.

The conference, themed “Eko as Legacy: Lawmaking, Leadership and the Preservation of Cultural Heritage,” will focus on cultural consciousness in leadership, as well as the protection and preservation of heritage.

Speaking at a briefing to announce the event, the Speaker of the Council, Mustapha Ishola, said the three-day conference would showcase the richness, pride and cultural identity of Lagos State.

“It is our conviction that leadership without identity is empty, and governance without cultural consciousness is incomplete. Lagos is not just a city; it is a legacy, and that legacy must be preserved, projected and protected by the next generation of leaders. Youth identity matters. Heritage must be visible, not forgotten,” Ishola said.

He said activities lined up for the conference include an awareness walk, the Eko Legislative Debate and stakeholder discussions involving policymakers, royal fathers and student leaders.

Ishola also acknowledged the Lagos State Government’s support for students through bursary and scholarship programmes, but expressed concern over delays and inconsistencies in bursary disbursement.

He said many students were finding it difficult to register for and access the bursary, resulting in low participation and, in some cases, the exclusion of eligible beneficiaries.

He also lamented limited access and engagement between student representatives and government authorities, urging the government to improve efficiency, transparency and student welfare policies.

“Responsible governance thrives on access, dialogue and responsiveness. As student parliamentarians, we are not adversaries; we are partners in progress, but partnership must be felt, not assumed,” he said.
