The Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation for the families of five Nigerians who died during the operation that rescued schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State.
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has warned that organisations that fail to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members posted to them may be blacklisted.
Nafiu gave the warning during a workshop in Lokoja, Kogi State, where discussions focused on improving the welfare of corps members serving in different organisations across the state.
He assured corps members that the Federal Government remains committed to their welfare and security. He also called on state and local governments, as well as other stakeholders, to provide more support for the NYSC scheme.
The NYSC boss advised corps members to always put their safety first and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
He also urged them to remain disciplined, dedicated to their duties, and stay away from activities that could damage their reputation.
Nafiu encouraged corps members to take the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously. According to him, the programme can help them develop useful skills and create opportunities for self-employment after service.
He advised them to identify business opportunities within their host communities and start earning income while still serving.
He also urged corps members to manage their finances wisely and use their service year as a period to learn important financial management skills.
Speaking at the event, the NYSC Coordinator in Kogi State, Tochi Chris-Moneke, thanked the Director-General for the visit. He said the visit showed the DG’s commitment to the welfare and security of both corps members and NYSC staff.
