The Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has indicated that former governors Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will announce their exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday as part of a broader political realignment.
Galadima made the disclosure on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement in Abuja, amid growing uncertainty over opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Although he did not name the platform, sources close to the former governors said both leaders were finalising arrangements to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a newly formed party reportedly linked to former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson.
A source familiar with the development said the leaders and their allies had already begun formal processes with the NDC leadership.
“Both Obi and Kwankwaso, along with their supporters, are set to complete the process and formally announce their defection on Monday,” the source said, adding that the move was partly informed by internal challenges previously encountered in the ADC.
Addressing supporters, Galadima urged them to prepare for criticism and opposition following the expected announcement, warning of coordinated media and social media attacks.
He advised supporters, particularly those active online, to respond strategically and avoid initiating attacks, but to defend their leaders when necessary.
The NNPP chieftain also alleged that opposition figures have faced sustained pressure, including actions by state institutions and internal crises within political parties, which he said have weakened platforms such as the SDP, PDP, ADC, NDP and PRP.
At the meeting, Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, expressed support for a potential Obi-Kwankwaso alliance, describing it as a viable political alternative ahead of the next elections.
Also speaking, activist Aisha Yesufu called for national unity, urging Nigerians to move beyond ethnic and regional divisions and work towards collective progress.
The anticipated announcement is expected to mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape as political actors reposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
