Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress Caucus in the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, has rejected claims by former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, questioning Peter Obi’s security record as governor of Anambra State.
Ogene, in a statement on Saturday, described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that Obi’s performance on security remains a matter of public record.
The lawmaker was reacting to comments reportedly made by Oshiomhole during a podcast interview in which he questioned Obi’s capacity to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
Ogene argued that some of the incidents cited by Oshiomhole occurred before Obi assumed office as governor of Anambra State in 2006.
He also maintained that measures aimed at tackling crime and strengthening community-based security structures in the state were initiated during Obi’s administration.
The lawmaker cited former Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Philemon Leha, as commending Obi’s support for security agencies during his tenure as governor.
Ogene further described the criticisms directed at Obi by political opponents as part of efforts to undermine his political standing ahead of the 2027 elections.
He added that Obi, like every other Nigerian, has the constitutional right to seek elective office and should not be subjected to smear campaigns.
