Police in Ogun State have detained a man accused of fabricating a bandit attack video and circulating it online to create panic and attract social media attention.
The suspect, identified as Qawiyu Oloyede, who resides along Sokoto Road in Atan-Ota, was picked up after a video clip showing his interrogation by officers began circulating on Sunday.
Authorities say the clip was part of an investigation into content he allegedly created to suggest a non-existent bandit invasion in the area.
During questioning, Oloyede, who works as a tailor, admitted to staging the incident. He told investigators that the video was designed to boost his online following rather than reflect any real security threat.
He also claimed that a local herder, whom he said regularly grazes cattle near his workshop, was used in the production but did not willingly participate in the act.
Oloyede further stated that he does not have formal education and cannot read or write, adding that captions attached to the video were prepared by an apprentice. He admitted to producing similar clips on at least two previous occasions.
Police say the material was deliberately designed to mislead the public and heighten fear of insecurity in the state.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest and said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further action.
He said, “The suspect is currently with the SCID.”
