The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has urged Ndigbo to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, describing the move as a strategic pathway.
In a press statement jointly issued by factional Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and it’s National Spokesman, Chief Thompson Ohia, the group said its position was based on “a careful and objective assessment of national political realities, historical patterns, and the collective aspirations of Ndigbo.”
The organization stated that unified support for Tinubu would strengthen Igbo political influence within the ruling APC and improve the Southeast’s negotiating power at the federal level.
According to the statement, continued APC leadership would ensure the completion of key federal road projects, encourage the creation of additional Southeast states, and promote policies aimed at economic growth in the region.
The group urged political actors from the Southeast to prioritize regional unity and long-term interests.
The organization congratulated President Tinubu on his victory in the APC 2026 presidential primaries and also commended Southeast governors who secured their parties’ gubernatorial tickets ahead of the elections.
As part of what it described as the “2031 Vice Presidency Initiative,” Ohanaeze disclosed that negotiations were already ongoing with political stakeholders and the Presidency to position an Igbo leader for the vice-presidential slot under the APC.
The group identified David Nweze Umahi and Chimaroke Nnamani as possible contenders for the position, citing their political experience and leadership capacity.
Ohanaeze called on Ndigbo to remain united and disciplined ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that overwhelming support for Tinubu would strengthen the Southeast’s political leverage, accelerate infrastructural development, and increase the chances of producing Nigeria’s Vice President from the region in 2031.
