Republican entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat former health director Dr Amy Acton have won their respective primaries, setting up a high-profile contest for the Ohio governorship this November.
The victories on Tuesday have set the stage for a race to succeed retiring Governor Mike DeWine, who is term-limited.
Ramaswamy, a 40-year-old billionaire who previously sought the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, defeated small-business owner Casey Putsch to secure the GOP nomination.
He received endorsements from President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Governor DeWine himself.
Ramaswamy entered the final primary stretch with a significant $30 million cash reserve, largely bolstered by $25 million from his personal funds.
Dr Amy Acton, who became a household name for her daily pandemic briefings as Ohio health director, easily secured the Democratic nomination after running unopposed.
She focused her campaign on affordability, painting Ramaswamy as a billionaire out of touch with the needs of average Ohioans.
Acton raised approximately $5.1 million in the first three months of 2026, a record for a Democratic challenger in the state.
The general election presents a historic choice for Ohioans: Dr Acton could become the first woman to govern the state, while Ramaswamy would be the first South Asian to do so.
