The Benin Summit Group has called on the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, to urgently rein in his aide, Mr. Emmanuel Egogo, following what it described as “unguarded, inflammatory, and culturally disrespectful” remarks directed at Hon. Billy Osawaru, Member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency.
In a statement issued by its Convener, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, the group expressed deep concern over the alleged comments, noting that they not only targeted a sitting federal lawmaker but also indirectly disrespected the revered Benin monarchy.
According to the group, while Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, such rights must be exercised with restraint, responsibility, and respect for Nigeria’s deeply rooted cultural institutions.
“The reported trivialization of the sacred salutation ‘Oba gha to kpereee’ and the suggestion that such veneration is out of place within the National Assembly is both offensive and unacceptable,” the statement noted.
The Benin Summit Group emphasized that the throne of the Oba of Benin, currently occupied by His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, remains a symbol of historical continuity, spiritual authority, and cultural identity that must not be subjected to ridicule or casual political commentary.
The group further warned that failure to address such conduct decisively could set a dangerous precedent, where political aides act with impunity and undermine institutions that hold significant meaning for the people.
“We therefore call on Governor Monday Okpebholo to, as a matter of urgency, call his aide to order and ensure that standards of discipline and respect are upheld within his administration,” the statement added.
It also urged Mr. Emmanuel Egogo to immediately retract his statements and tender an unreserved apology to Hon. Billy Osawaru, the Benin Traditional Council, and the good people of Edo State.
Reaffirming its position, the Benin Summit Group stated that political authority must always operate in harmony with cultural legitimacy, stressing that respect for traditional institutions is not optional but essential to national cohesion.
