One person was killed while 13 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a lone crash that occurred at the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.
NewsWatch Metro gathered on Sunday from a Facebook user, Akinola Oluwarantimi, that the accident occurred in the afternoon.
Multiple videos from the accident scene shared by Oluwarantimi showed sympathisers at the scene of the accident trying to rescue people from the wreckage of the vehicle.
The vehicle was also seen lying on its side, while some persons suspected to be victims sat on the floor and groaned in pain.
A female victim was also seen lying motionless on the road with blood stains on the expressway.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed that the crash occurred at about 12:00 p.m. around Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor.
Odunsi said 16 persons were involved in the accident, comprising two adult males, 12 adult females and two female children.
He noted that “one adult female lost her life, while 13 others, including two adult males and 11 adult females, sustained injuries. Two female children escaped unhurt.”
Odunsi attributed the crash to a combination of speed violation and a tyre burst involving a white Mazda bus with registration number MUS 543XZ.
“The probable causes of the crash were speed violation and tyre burst. The crash involved a white Mazda bus with registration number MUS 543XZ,” the update noted.
Odunsi added that jewellery and bags were recovered from the accident scene.
According to the FRSC, rescue operatives arrived at the scene within five minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately commenced evacuation of the victims.
“The injured victims were conveyed to the State Specialist Hospital, Ifo, for prompt medical care, while the corpse was deposited at the morgue,” the statement added.
The FRSC advised motorists to regularly inspect their tyres and avoid excessive speed, particularly on highways, to prevent avoidable road crashes.
This comes barely one month after a vehicle plunged off the same Eruku Bridge and claimed 11 lives.
NewsWatch Metro reported on May 11 that the accident occurred at night.
Odunsi had stated that the crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the bridge.
He had noted that all 11 occupants of the vehicle, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, died in the accident.
