A chieftain of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Katch Ononuju, has alleged that financial expectations, including a request for accommodation support, contributed to the fallout between lawyer and politician Kenneth Okonkwo and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview, Ononuju claimed that Okonkwo expected greater support from Obi before eventually aligning with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
According to him, Okonkwo had sought assistance to rent a duplex, but Obi advised him to begin with a more modest accommodation.
“He said he wanted to rent a duplex, and Peter told him to start with a flat,” Ononuju said.
He further alleged that after meeting Atiku, Okonkwo received the kind of support he had previously sought.
“He wanted money for a flat. When he met Atiku, he talked to Atiku, and Atiku agreed to assist him. Atiku gave him money for a flat,” he claimed.
Ononuju argued that financial expectations were at the heart of the disagreement between Okonkwo and members of the Obidient Movement.
“What brought trouble between him and us? Money to rent a house,” he said.
The Obidient chieftain also criticised Okonkwo’s entertainment career, describing him as unsuccessful in the movie industry before his transition into politics.
“Kenneth Okonkwo was a pioneer of the Nigerian film industry, but he failed and later came into the political space,” he alleged.
Okonkwo has not publicly responded to Ononuju’s claims.
