The Deputy Commander of Operation Rainbow, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Dennis David Babale, has been killed after security personnel came under attack along the Bokkos-Barkin Ladi road in Plateau State.
Babale was reportedly ambushed by gunmen at about 4:06 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, while travelling in a Toyota Hilux vehicle in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
According to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the personnel came under fire from unidentified gunmen while responding to a distress call.
Troops of Sector 4, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), subsequently moved to the scene following the distress report.
Babale sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and was evacuated to the General Hospital, Barkin Ladi, for treatment, but later died from his injuries, according to the report.
The Plateau State Police Command also confirmed that a Chief Superintendent of Police attached to Operation Rainbow was killed in an ambush along the Gagshi Road between Barkin Ladi and Bokkos.
Police spokesman, Alfred Alabo, said investigations were ongoing to identify those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
Following the incident, troops and personnel from other security agencies launched operations and a manhunt for the attackers in the area.
The killing occurred amid renewed security concerns in Plateau State, particularly in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas.
The Plateau State Government had imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the three local government areas from September 21 following a series of attacks.
Three civilians were also reportedly killed in a separate attack at Rakok, also known as Kafi Abu, in Barkin Ladi on Tuesday, according to reports.
