The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, together with the Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang, has led a major desilting exercise aimed at clearing choked drains across parts of the Ashanti Region.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the regional authorities to improve drainage systems and reduce the recurring risk of flooding, especially as the rainy season intensifies.
In a video from the exercise, an excavator is seen actively clearing heavy silt, debris, and waste materials from a heavily polluted waterway, which officials say has contributed significantly to poor drainage flow in the area.
Sources say the initiative is a proactive measure to ensure free-flowing drains, improve sanitation, and protect communities from flood-related disasters that often affect parts of Kumasi and surrounding areas during heavy rainfall.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene emphasized the importance of maintaining clean drainage systems, urging residents to avoid dumping refuse into gutters and water channels, which often worsens flooding situations.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly also reaffirmed its commitment to sustained desilting exercises and stricter enforcement of sanitation by-laws to prevent future blockages.
Residents in affected communities have welcomed the exercise, expressing hope that it will help reduce the frequent flooding challenges that disrupt businesses, homes, and transportation during the rainy season.
The exercise is expected to continue across other flood-prone areas within the region in the coming weeks.
