Community leaders in Korle Woko, a popular area near the Korle Lagoon in Accra, have taken strong action to drive away suspected sex workers. They destroyed doors of makeshift structures during a special exercise to reclaim the community and restore peace.
On Sunday, July 13, 2026, traditional leaders from Ga Mashie, including Nii Tetteh Morwaamor and others like Fanta Ayata, led the operation. They went from house to house, told the women believed to be involved in prostitution to pack their things and leave. They collected keys from the women and warned them not to return. In some places, the leaders broke down doors of the small wooden structures and rooms used for the business. The leaders said the growing number of sex workers in the area was spoiling the community’s name and values, especially among young people. They blamed poverty and other problems but insisted it was time to clean up the place for the good of everyone living there.
One leader was heard saying: “Lock the door and hand over the keys. We don’t want to see you here again.” The exercise was peaceful but firm, with many residents watching and supporting the move.
