Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has rejected claims that the Labour Party (LP) is working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that he spoke in Abuja while addressing journalists at the party’s national headquarters shortly after attending the first meeting of the newly formed National Working Committee led by Nenadi Usman.
Otti made it clear that there is no plan for the Labour Party to weaken itself or step aside to allow another party gain easy victory in the coming polls.
There have been rumours that the party may avoid presenting strong candidates, especially for the presidential race, as part of a hidden plan to support the ruling party. Otti dismissed the idea, describing it as unrealistic and not worth taking seriously.
He explained that both parties operate separately and must continue that way if democracy is to function properly. According to him, it makes no sense for a party that has built its structure over time to suddenly give it up for another.
“APC will remain a political party, and the Labour Party will remain so too. How will the Labour Party collapse its structure after having its own structure?
“If that is your prayer for us, that the Labour Party will collapse its structure, that will not happen,” the governor said in response to a question.
On the internal crisis involving some members who had supported a different leadership, Otti said the party is ready to welcome everyone back. He added that the long dispute has ended and there is no need for division, as all sides should now move forward together.
He noted that some state chairmen who were once aligned with the opposing camp have already returned and are now part of the current leadership, showing that unity within the party is gradually being restored.
