Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a resounding victory in Ekiti South-West Local Government Area, the home council of African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Dare Bejide on Saturday.
According to official results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on early Sunday, the results showed that the APC polled 14,705 votes to emerge the clear winner in the local government, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) garnered 1,800 votes. Bejide’s ADC finished third with 1,076 votes.
The outcome marked a significant electoral triumph for Oyebanji, who not only dominated the local government but also defeated one of his major challengers in his ancestral base.
INEC figures indicated that Ekiti South-West LGA, comprising 11 Registration Areas and 188 Polling Units, has 56,003 registered voters. A total of 18,094 voters were accredited for the election, while 18,046 votes were cast.
Out of the total votes cast, 17,693 were declared valid, while 353 were rejected.
Other parties recorded marginal votes, with the Action Democratic Party (ADP) polling 56 votes, African Action Congress (AAC) 22 votes, Social Democratic Party (SDP) seven votes, Accord five votes, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) five votes, Young Progressives Party (YPP) four votes, while the Action Alliance (AA), All Progressives Movement (APM) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) secured three votes each. The Action Peoples Party (APP) polled one vote, while the Labour Party (LP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) also recorded one vote apiece.
The result underscored the APC’s overwhelming dominance in the local government and highlighted Oyebanji’s strong grassroots support across the state. For Bejide, the outcome represented a disappointing showing in the council area widely regarded as his political stronghold.
