At least 15 Pakistani soldiers were killed in a major suicide attack on a military camp in Bajaur, Pakistan, according to initial reports. The attack took place in the troubled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has witnessed several terror-related incidents in recent years.
Explosion followed by gun battle
Reports said the attackers first carried out a powerful explosion near a military facility inside the camp. The blast created panic and confusion, allowing heavily armed terrorists to enter the army camp.
Soon after the explosion, a long exchange of gunfire took place between security forces and the attackers. Security officials have not yet released the final casualty count, and the operation in the area is reportedly still ongoing.
TTP claims responsibility
The banned terror outfit Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, also known as TTP, claimed responsibility for the suicide attack. In a statement, the group said the operation was carried out by its “Special Istishadi Forces” (SIF).
This is reportedly the first time since the Quetta attack in October 2025 that the TTP has officially claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing.
Security tightened across the region
Following the attack, security has been increased across Bajaur and nearby areas. Bajaur, located near the Afghanistan border, has long been considered a sensitive region affected by militancy and insurgent activity.
Authorities have launched a search operation in the area to track down any remaining attackers or supporters linked to the incident.
Second suicide attack in a week
This is the second suicide attack reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within a week. Earlier on Tuesday, a suicide blast took place in Lakki Marwat district’s Naurang Bazaar area.
In that incident, a bomber detonated an explosives-filled auto-rickshaw, killing two police personnel and a woman. Several others were injured, while nearby shops and vehicles were badly damaged in the blast.
Previous attack in February
The province had also witnessed another deadly terror attack in February this year. In that incident, five police officers and two civilians lost their lives.
The recent rise in attacks has once again raised concerns over the security situation in Pakistan’s northwestern regions.
