Pakistan forgets Islam as one decision my Modi govt brings Asim Munir on his knees, suddenly started talking about Indus Valley Civilisation due to…, what is this all about?

Amid heightened tensions with India, Pakistan is embracing the Indus Valley Civilization and other ancient heritage sites as part of its national identity in a big way. It marks a significant shift for a country that maintained the Sindh conquest of Muhammad bin Qasim in 712 CE as its foundational moment. The question here is: Why is Pakistan suddenly in love with Harappa and Mohenjo-daro? What role does it play in the Indus Waters Treaty, which India has kept in abeyance?

Pakistan, which has long taught students that its history began with the Sindh conquest in 712 CE, began new excavations at Mohenjo-daro of the Indus Valley Civilisation, which had seen little activity since 1965, when American archaeologist George Dales excavated it. This excavation started at the 5,000-year-old metropolis last year in June, months after India launched Operation Sindoor, putting the Indus Treaty in abeyance.

Pakistan’s U-turn on Indus

Just a year later, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chief, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, cited Islamabad’s opposition to India’s suspension of the Treaty with a civilisational claim. He invoked Mohenjo-daro and the Indus Valley Civilisation, claiming that Pakistan was the “true custodian of the Indus” and it was by virtue of this that it had a historic right to the river as its “defender”.

These developments underscore the newfound love for its pre-Islamic history and for the Indus Valley Civilisation to strengthen its claim as the rightful heir of the Indus legacy and Indus River system.
