Pakistan is reportedly considering renaming some of its missiles that are named after historical Muslim rulers and military commanders, following recent remarks by the country’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif.
For decades, Pakistan has named several of its missiles after figures such as Ghaznavi, Ghauri, Babur and Abdali. These names were chosen as part of the country’s military symbolism and national identity.
Ties with Afghanistan have changed
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have become strained since the Taliban returned to power. At the same time, Pakistan has increasingly highlighted its connection to the Indus civilisation, especially after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.
Against this backdrop, some historical figures who were once celebrated in Pakistan are now being openly criticised by political leaders.
Defence minister questions missile names
In a recent interview, Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said it was a mistake to name missiles after historical figures such as Mahmud of Ghazni and Ahmad Shah Abdali.
He said these rulers should not be treated as heroes because, in his view, they were invaders who brought destruction to the region.
“I do not consider Mahmud of Ghazni a hero. He was a looter who came from Afghanistan, attacked India and returned,” Asif said. He also agreed that the time had come to reconsider names such as Ghaznavi and Abdali for Pakistan’s missiles.
Debate over Pakistan’s national identity
The remarks have sparked discussion about Pakistan’s national identity and the historical figures it chooses to honour.
Supporters of changing the names argue that Pakistan should celebrate personalities linked to its own history rather than foreign rulers. Others believe the issue reflects a broader debate about how the country’s past should be remembered.
