Popular Nigerian Pastor Chukwuemeka Odumeje, has accused the Federal Government of playing politics with the repair of the Onitsha Head Bridge.
Speaking during a sermon, the controversial cleric claimed the government only moved to repair the bridge because the 2027 election is approaching, while questioning the amount reportedly budgeted for the project.
Odumeje also warned that the bridge could remain closed for a long period once repairs begin.
“Federal Government has come to play politics with Onitsha Head Bridge. That is why, now that the election is close, they have come to repair it. If you hear how much they budgeted for that, you will be shocked. Before you know it, it will take too long to reopen,” he said.
He also criticised political elites in the South-East, accusing them of making noise without doing enough to address the region’s infrastructure and diplomatic challenges.
According to the cleric, it is shameful that the South-East does not have an embassy, forcing residents who need visas to travel to Abuja or Lagos.
“It’s so shameful that in 2026, there is no embassy in the South-East. Before anyone can get a visa, he or she must travel to Abuja or Lagos. When we talk about one Nigeria, every major tribe should have at least one seaport and one international embassy,” he added.
Odumeje questioned the role of South-East elites in addressing the region’s challenges, accusing them of deceiving themselves.
His comments have reignited discussions about infrastructure, political representation and the distribution of federal institutions across Nigeria’s regions.
