Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has opened up about the reasons behind his decision to leave the club after a decade in charge, citing fatigue and a desire for a new challenge as the key factors.
He confirmed that City’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday will be his last game as manager, marking the end of an extraordinarily successful era at the club.
Over his ten years at the Etihad Stadium, the Spanish tactician led City to 20 trophies, among them six Premier League titles and the club’s historic first UEFA Champions League victory.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Friday, Guardiola said he feels the team now requires fresh energy and a new voice to continue moving forward, describing it as the beginning of a new chapter for the club.
The 55-year-old acknowledged that the relentless pace of top-level football management had worn him down after nearly two decades without a significant break, noting that the pressure of competing for titles every few days had become increasingly demanding.
While he will continue to have ties to the City Football Group through a global ambassadorial role, he made clear that he intends to take an extended break from coaching before considering his next move.
Reflecting on the cumulative weight of his managerial career, which has spanned Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, Guardiola noted that he has been working at the highest level almost without pause for around 17 to 18 years and feels the need to rest and recharge.
He departs widely celebrated as the most successful manager in Manchester City’s history, having transformed the club into a dominant force in both English and European football.
