Peter Obi, has said he would work to strengthen opposition parties if elected President, stressing that a vibrant opposition is essential for Nigeria’s democratic development.
Obi made the remarks during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, where he was asked whether a president should help build the strength of opposition parties.
Responding to the question, Obi said he would ensure opposition parties remain strong and actively involved in the country’s governance.
“If I’m the president of this country, I will do everything possible to make opposition parties strong and participatory in governance,” he said.
When asked why a president who believes his party has the best ideas for the country should support the growth of rival parties, Obi argued that democracy thrives on diverse perspectives.
According to him, no political party has exclusive ownership of ideas capable of advancing national development.
“It’s about democracy. No one party has a monopoly on ideas that make society work,” Obi added.
Obi’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about Nigeria’s democratic institutions, political pluralism and the role of opposition parties in promoting accountability and effective governance.
