Petrol-Diesel Price in India: Petrol and diesel prices in India have been hiked four times in the last 15 days. The impact has been felt by the general public, who are currently grappling with persistently rising inflation. This is due to the prolonged Iran–US war, which began on February 28, and the Hormuz crisis that triggered global supply disruption.

The latest petrol and diesel price revision comes against the backdrop of stalled progress in the US-Iran peace agreement and the Strait of Hormuz being shut. However, the public now has some hope of relief from rising fuel prices.

A recent statement by US President Donald Trump on Friday has sent shockwaves through the international oil market. Let’s understand the impact of his claim on rising oil prices in India. 

Trump is now making a “final” decision on whether or not to reach a peace settlement with Iran. “I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination,” Trump said in a lengthy post on X, stressing that Tehran must agree to open the Hormuz shipping lanes and never to have nuclear weapons. Trump added that Iran “will complete the immediate removal” of mines in the crucial waterway and that the US naval blockade of Iranian ports “will now be lifted,” enabling oil and other tankers to start operations again.

Will petrol and diesel become cheaper in India?

Trump’s decision could have a direct and profound impact on petrol and diesel prices. If the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is completely lifted, fuel prices in India are likely to become cheaper due to three reasons:

• Clearance will increase international crude oil supply, leading to a decline in the prices in the oil market.

• Ship insurance and freight charges, which were increased due to the Iran-US war, will also decline. This means that oil imports will be cheaper in India.

• Trump’s statement indicates that the path to dialogue with Iran is opening up. If Iran agrees to US demands, prices could fall drastically.
