The Kano State Government has commenced the rehabilitation of the Goron Dutse Reservoir, the main and most strategic water distribution facility serving Kano metropolis, as part of efforts to improve water supply across the state.
Dr Dahir Muhammad Hashim, Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Water Resources, disclosed this in a statement on Monday following an inspection of the ongoing rehabilitation works at the facility.
According to him, the reservoir consists of three major storage tanks with capacities of 7.3 million litres, 11.2 million litres and 22.5 million litres, giving it a combined storage capacity of 40.5 million litres.

Hashim noted that the two smaller tanks, with capacities of 7.3 million and 11.2 million litres, were constructed in 1930 but had been abandoned for more than 30 years.
He added that nearly all critical infrastructure at the reservoir had been vandalised over the years.
“I am pleased to note that rehabilitation efforts are progressing steadily,” he said.
The commissioner explained that pipe replacement works are ongoing on the 7.3 million and 11.2 million litre tanks, while desilting activities are currently underway on the 22.5 million litre tank.

He said the intervention was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of the administration’s broader efforts to restore water supply across Kano State.
According to Hashim, the rehabilitation of the Goron Dutse Reservoir complements ongoing works at the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants aimed at improving water production and distribution to residents.
He expressed optimism that the project would strengthen the state’s water infrastructure and help address longstanding water supply challenges in Kano.
