The visit has attracted significant attention as it could provide an opportunity for a possible meeting between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the summit.
PM Modi To Attend G7 Summit In France
The G7 Summit will bring together leaders of major economies and invited partner nations to discuss key global challenges. During the summit, PM Modi is expected to exchange views with G7 leaders and representatives of international organisations on a wide range of issues.
The discussions are likely to focus on strengthening international partnerships, rebuilding global cooperation, promoting balanced and sustainable economic growth, and ensuring the safe and effective deployment of artificial intelligence. The Prime Minister is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders during his visit.
France is hosting this year’s summit in Evian, where global leaders will discuss economic, technological and geopolitical developments affecting countries around the world.
Will PM Modi And Donald Trump Meet?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the summit is whether PM Modi and Donald Trump will hold a bilateral meeting. While the MEA has confirmed the Prime Minister’s participation, it has not officially announced any meeting with the US President.
Speculation increased after Trump recently confirmed that he would attend the G7 Summit in France. If the two leaders meet, it would be their first face-to-face bilateral engagement since PM Modi’s visit to the United States in February 2025.
Over the past year, India-US relations have witnessed both cooperation and disagreements. Issues such as tariffs on Indian exports, India’s purchase of Russian oil, and comments made by Trump on India’s foreign policy have created occasional tensions. Despite this, both leaders have remained in contact through several phone conversations.
India-US Relations Show Signs Of Improvement
Recent developments suggest that relations between New Delhi and Washington may be improving. Last month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India and discussed cooperation in defence, trade, strategic technologies, energy security, connectivity, education and people-to-people ties.
Meanwhile, both countries are moving closer to finalising a bilateral trade agreement. A US delegation visited India earlier this month for negotiations covering trade, customs procedures, non-tariff barriers and economic security cooperation.
Against this backdrop, a possible Modi-Trump meeting at the G7 Summit could become one of the most closely watched diplomatic events of the year.
