Operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia have arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, over alleged involvement in the circulation of counterfeit naira notes.
Hassan, who hails from Zaria in Kaduna State, was picked up during an intelligence-led operation at the Lafia cattle market where he was reportedly caught in the act of passing out fake ₦1,000 notes.
Police authorities said the arrest followed credible intelligence that led officers to monitor suspicious activities within the busy market before moving in on the suspect.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted to the offence and told investigators that the fake currency was supplied to him by an associate based in Mararaba Akunza in Lafia. Efforts are now underway to track down the alleged accomplice, who remains at large.
The Nasarawa State Police Command warned residents, particularly traders and cash handlers such as POS operators, fuel station attendants and transport workers, to remain alert during transactions.
It urged members of the public to carefully examine naira notes, noting that counterfeit bills often show poor print quality, incorrect sizing, repeated serial numbers and missing security features.
The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, directed that the suspect would be prosecuted once investigations are completed, while reaffirming the command’s commitment to clamping down on financial crimes in the state.
