The Nigeria Police Force has opened an investigation into a widely shared video that purportedly shows a guy in police uniform operating a commercial bus in Lagos while threatening to murder passengers and dispose of their remains in a river.
A video of the incident, which is said to have happened close to Eko Bridge, showed the driver conversing with passengers while sporting a police cap and T-shirt.
“You talk like you want to kill,” remarked one traveler. You can observe what Nigerian police do. You follow the entire bus argument. You want to give us some water.
The man responded, “See my face,” as several of the passengers threatened to film him and upload it online.
The driver grew hostile when passengers questioned the bus’s abrupt stop, according to an account of the incident shared by X user Oyindamola on Monday.
“The driver wanted to acquire petrol, so we were basically discarded in the middle of the road without a sufficient explanation or care for our safety. Instead of defusing the situation as people naturally started to wonder what was happening, he turned hostile and began threatening to kill us and dump our remains into the water close to Eko Bridge, according to the post.
The NPF New Media Officer responded on Tuesday, CSP Aliyu Giwa, confirmed that the Force is reviewing the footage.
Giwa pointed out that although the individual was dressed in “NPF/Police” clothing, he was not wearing a typical police uniform. The person’s status as a current police officer has not yet been confirmed, he continued.
“A video that has been making the rounds online on the purported activities of a person in Lagos has caught our notice.
According to first observations, the person is wearing clothing marked “NPF/Police” rather than a typical police uniform. It is still unclear if he is a serving officer.
Giwa declared, “Any behavior that threatens or intimidates citizens is unacceptable, and such behavior is unprofessional.”
“We encourage anyone with credible information to assist in identifying the individual by contacting the nearest police station or using official Nigeria Police Force channels,” he continued.
“Appropriate action will be taken based on the established facts, and the matter is under review.”
