Nigeria has stepped up efforts to attract Chinese investment into the power sector, with the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, leading a delegation to Beijing for strategic engagements with major Chinese engineering, financing and industrial institutions.
The delegation held meetings with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), Sinomach Group, China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (SINOSURE), Standard Chartered Bank and China National Electric Engineering Company (CNEEC).
Discussions focused on expanding Nigeria’s electricity transmission capacity, improving grid reliability and developing new generation and hydropower projects.
The engagements also centred on securing financing for critical electricity infrastructure as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to address longstanding challenges in the power sector.
As part of the visit, the Nigerian delegation witnessed a factory acceptance test of transmission cables at Hengfei Cable’s Changsha Industrial Park.
Beyond electricity, Minister Tegbe used the engagements to invite Chinese investors to explore opportunities across other sectors of the Nigerian economy.
These include steel production, automotive manufacturing, digital infrastructure, data centres, cold-chain logistics and sugar processing.
The visit is aimed at strengthening Nigeria-China economic cooperation while mobilising technical expertise, industrial partnerships and financing to support Nigeria’s infrastructure and economic development.
The power-sector discussions come amid the Federal Government’s efforts to expand generation and transmission capacity and improve the reliability of electricity supply nationwide.
