The Presidency has begun moves to address rising tension over the conduct of All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
A Villa source who spoke with The Nation confirmed that the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Special Adviser to the President on Political and Other Matters, Ibrahim Masari, met with the leadership of the National Assembly.
Those at the meeting included Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; and Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu.
The source said after the meeting with the National Assembly leadership at the Presidential Villa, the Presidential Supervision Team on National Assembly Primaries also met with members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF).
According to the source, the meetings were convened following several petitions received by President Bola Tinubu over alleged attempts by some governors to hijack National Assembly primaries in APC-controlled states.
The source said, “The President has received many petitions on how the governors have been trying to hijack National Assembly Primaries in APC states. There is so much tension.
“The Presidential Supervision Team is to foster peace, coordinate, monitor the process of primaries and manage conflict before, during and after primaries.”
Tinubu May Order Primaries
The source added that where consensus fails, the President may direct the party to conduct credible and transparent primaries among aspirants.
The source said, “Where there is no agreement, the President will direct the party to organise credible and transparent primaries among the aspirants.
“The team is working to assist the National Working Committee of the APC to solve emerging challenges. Thursday meetings will surely lead to others. But the buck stops on the President’s table.”
