WASHINGTON – The US and Iran are close to signing a deal involving a 60-day ceasefire extension, during which the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened and Iran would be able to freely sell oil, Axios reported on May 23, citing a US official.
Under the proposed agreement, negotiations would be held on curbing Iran’s nuclear programme.
Axios said Tehran gave Washington through mediators verbal commitments about the scope of the concessions it is willing to make on suspending enrichment.
The US would also agree to negotiate over lifting sanctions and unfreezing Iranian funds during the 60-day period. US forces that were mobilised in recent months would stay in the region during this period, and would only withdraw if a final deal is reached, Axios reported.
Iran wanted funds unfrozen immediately and permanent sanctions relief, while the US said that would only happen after tangible consessions were made.
US President Donald Trump sounded out several Arab and Muslim leaders about the deal in a conference call on May 23, and all said they support it, Axios reported. REUTERS
