The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has formally admitted former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, into its fold, describing his defection as a significant boost to its vision for a reformed and prosperous Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, the party said Baba-Ahmed’s decision to join the PRP signals “a new dawn” for its political movement.
The party noted that the development reinforces its commitment to national renewal and good governance.
According to the statement, Baba-Ahmed’s entry, along with his supporters across the country, is expected to strengthen the party’s push for integrity in governance, improved security, and economic transformation.
The PRP added that its platform remains open to Nigerians who are committed to building a better country.
The party urged citizens from all walks of life to rally behind its agenda, which it said is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s numerous challenges.
It reiterated that its focus is on creating a just, secure, and united nation.
Highlighting its policy direction, the PRP said its five-point agenda centres on restoring credibility in leadership, tackling insecurity through institutional reforms, revitalising the economy, and restructuring governance to ensure fairness and efficiency.
The party stressed that these priorities are designed to move the country beyond rhetoric and deliver tangible progress, particularly in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and rural development.
Earlier, Baba-Ahmed revealed that he advised Peter Obi on his political plans ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Naijaonpoint reports that he said the discussion took place on January 31, 2024, when he suggested that Obi should consider choosing a new running mate from among strong political figures such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso or Nasir El-Rufai, or any other suitable candidate.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Ahmed explained that despite their differences in political approach, he remains supportive of Obi. He made it clear that their views do not fully align, but his backing for Obi has not changed.
Ahmed also stated that he believes their party secured victory in the 2023 presidential election.
However, he expressed concern that Obi did not take stronger steps to reclaim what he sees as their mandate.
According to him, while he stands by Obi, he felt it was necessary to be honest about their differences and offer advice on how to move forward politically ahead of the next election cycle.
He said: “I was the one who told Obi on 31 January, 2024 that, ‘Kwankwaso or Nasir El-Rufai or another person, you may approach them. As far as I am concerned I will continue to support you but our politics are different, you let go of 2023 that we won.’”
